Montreal to New York Fall Color

French and English, good food, fall colors, crisp air and time away. I don’t know if I fell in love with Montreal but maybe it fell a little in love with me. The people are kind especially if you speak French and I found myself admiring the old buildings the water and who knew it’s an island? I think more than one person told me that.

Hello, World!

The fall color, food and french were my biggest draws and none were a let down. It’s not France so please don’t go expecting that. I found the city to be full of character, history and interest.

The Jean-Talon market selling fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers, cheese you name it I saw it there. It’s an old market and people were shopping on Sunday for there weekly goods.

I bought a few things to have a simple dinner of wine, cheese, bread and salami and olives. A little appetizer dinner that I l had to have in order to try some of the goods.

The olives are on my list of scrumptious. Almond filled, garlic filled, hot peppers you name it they stuffed it. I am still tasting the salt and crunch in my mouth from the olive filled with marcona almonds. The best of both worlds.

A morning spent on a food tour gave me a layout of the “Mile End” district the hip and up and coming artsy neighborhood that mixes French and English. Cross the street and boom you are in the “English section” although everywhere both languages are required by law on signs which makes it easy for a tourist who doesn’t speak French.

The Local food tour guided my small group through the tastes of the streets. Everything from Vegan Falafel sandwiches, montéal style bagels (my favorite) and hot chocolate to gnocchi and vanilla brioche.

A stop at an old theater gave us a rest for our stomachs and feet until we were back out again tasting, chatting, and learning the best spots to go for coffee, dinner, etc.

Although I liked the food tour I wondered if my research would have brought me to some of the places on my own.

The foodie in me typically does more research than necessary on where to go and eat and a few of the places I was already in the know about.

I will say I liked the personalized tour, small samples and tidbits on the area.

After food touring I decided I needed to make my own dinner at my 150 year old airbnb and relax on the couch. Potato soup for the blustery day was calling my name so leeks, potatoes and butter were purchased. Comfort food at it’s best. A small baguette and I was set. Small Grocery shops were everywhere I found and with the US dollar to Canadian dollar ratio I was eating on the cheap everywhere so even purchasing a bottle of wine with the higher tax rate wasn’t a problem. Now is the time to go to Canada if you are a US Citizen.

More highlights not to be missed included :

  • A few great eats include Tommy’s a cafe with greenery hanging everywhere, upstairs seating, and Greek avocado Toasts…I am so going to copy this and make it at home!

avocado toast with feta..JPG
  • Mont Royal especially the fall color if you have an opportunity. This Large Park on a mountain (you can take a bus to the top) was designed by the Olmsted brothers the same guys who designed Central Park and for those living in Seattle, Volunteer Park, a very cool spot if you haven’t been. The view from Mont Royal is fantastic. One looks down onto the city and trails are all over leading in different directions. Photos of the yellow and gold leaves don’t do it justice although I tried ;)

  • Montreal Botanical Gardens and Festival of Lights in the fall. The lights are gorgeous and surrounding plant life and water features was very calming and made me slow my foot pace.

  • On my last night I ate at this place called Pizza Napoli and had lasagna the good old fashioned kind. The kind your mama makes you or at least what you imagined your mama making for you in case you didn’t have that growing up;)

I ended my trip on a train ride headed down to New York so that I could pass along the Adirondacks and see the blazes of color along the lakes. (It’s not just about the chairs, it is a real place.)

The train leaves at 10 am and it’s a long ride but spectacular. I recommend it highly and if possible prior to daylight savings time so that you can get the golden hour as you pass by the lakes.

Breathtaking.

You feel like you are passing all of it to quickly.

The camera click is constant, and the left side is best for the lake views and color so grab a seat and take it all in.

Customs can take a while but goes faster when you can interpret as it turns out I had to do, kind of a funny fluke.

Poor guy who got me…LOL Who knew US customs agents don’t speak French at the border?

But after that we were back on track and flying down the tracks.

If you have the time this train trip is a must for the fall. Check out the photos below and you will understand.

I have always loved trains and the sound of them I guess because I grew up listening to them at night. They would pass by and the whistle blew always as it crossed nearby, maybe I should try listening to that to fall asleep too?

They make a white noise of everything now a days:) Who knew I had such nostalgia for trains.

So for a fall holiday would I recommend Montreal,….

yes.

Next time I’m going to go see Quebec City as well, not quite enough time to do it all. However, there will be a next time:)

So tell me what should I put on my list for Quebec City?

Have you been?

What did I miss in Montréal?

Love hearing your thoughts.

London

Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.
— Samuel Johnson

London Doors

Eating in London was  phenomenal, why?

Because we did a food tour?

Because traveling makes me hungry?

Because I got to go to NOPI ?

Dessert at Nopi

Yep to all of the above.  Because that's what foodies like me thrive on.

London has so much to offer.  Culture, language, books, and food no wonder this is a reason most people start their European tours in England.  And don't forget Red double decker buses and Red telephone booths.

Bacon Sandwich with homemade ketchup from Nose to Tale Restaurant Saint John

Some highlights of our vacay definitely came from the EATLONDON food tour!  Starting with bacon 🐷 sandwiches at a nose 🐽to tail 🐖 restaurant made the drooling begin from every part of my tongue. 👅

I swear all five tastes were stimulated and maybe even the sixth...gotta love umami.

A 17th century old restaurant called  the English Restaurant  (I know inventive, right?) poured out upon us love and sweets in the form of what is known to us in the US as bread pudding.  To the English however, this means adding hot sweet liquid. Who knew that bread and butter pudding could evoke memories of cold nights and hot fires in just a ten minute sitting. And what fun filling the required "spoon"  hole with a liquid custard cream so thick that you wished you could pour it in your coffee ☕️ every morning.  At least I do.😉

Bread and Butter Pudding from the English Restaurant

Alas, the EatLondon tour did not only give us sweets and treats but history and tales to make every American storyteller jealous.  Why doesn't the US have such historical bits and bobs?  Why does the word potluck come out when fuddle is so much more fun?  How do I know what Cockney word is being used?  Why does that building have the Jewish calendar and the Julian Calendar?  History and Eating go hand in hand and the EatLondon tour took it to a whole new level. Recommended? Yep.

What is it about England that makes me think so fancy?  Maybe it's "the Crown. 👑 😉 Yes the Crown Jewels are a must see at the Tower of London.  Suggestion go first thing in the morning to the Tower of London and visit the Crown Jewels first so you can miss the rush of people later.  Of course photos are prohibited inside but the history of the scepter the weight of the crown and all of those little details you wanted to know are told on the audio tour or you can just talk to the security inside.  Most of them seemed happy to oblige with stories to tell, after all watching over crowns all day must go to one's head. (ba dump bump!) I know bad  pun but well intended. 😉  Or if you just want to have an overview, Netflix is handing out info in their latest series the "Crown."  Addicting to say the least.

Last but not least I suggest grabbing a coffee at the TATE Modern and heading to the top for a fabulous view for Free!

London from the Tate modern

You can of course grab coffee elsewhere before your TATE visit and top of my list was definitely Ozone Coffee. Not near the TATE but well worth a visit on it's own or maybe add a very cool Street Art Tour to your list of Artwork to see on the streets before seeing the famous peeps in the museum. You may be surprised by your view of street art and the accomplishments of those artists making art that is ephemeral.  In fact it might even disappear before the guide can give you a chance to view the vision as had this piece upon our guided visit.  Thankfully we had seen it the week before during our first night stay at CitizenM an eclectic hotel for the modern hotel goer.

Street Art London

Besides Roasting Beans before your eyes at Ozone their brunch is also very yummy, make sure to nab a seat  at the counter facing the kitchen to watch them make your breakfast or lunch if you are a true foodie!   And guess what being that they are from New Zealand they have Lamingtons...of course there's always still the "great debate," are Lamingtons from New Zealand or Australia.? I will let you decide, read about it here!

Tips: Eating,Drinking and Shopping

A bit of time in London is well spent and the food is hitting top notch and is truly world renown.  Until next time I leave you with these words from my favorite lady  authors of London:

A writer is, after all, only half his book. The other half is the reader and from the reader the writer learns.
— P.L. Travers

May you share your thoughts with me so I may learn more from you my reader in your comments, stories, and views.

Orcas Island

As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans

What do:

  • three days off

  • a ferry ride

  • a small island

  • airbnb

  • hikes

  • oysters

  • beer

all have in common?  Our trip to Orcas Island.

If you don't live in the Pacific Northwest you might be saying where?  It's a small island north of Seattle (that's the basic jaunt) and a ferry ride or plane ride over that is part of the island hopping scene of the San Juan Islands.  And to answer your question yes they do have Orca whales🐳 (so Not an orca emoji...gotta work with what I've got)

I am sure the majority of people, judging from the whale watching tour brochures left for us by our kind airbnb host, come to take the tour and see the whales especially in season when they will be plentiful.  This however wasn't our first rodeo to the islands so more island exploring of food, sunshine, hiking and rest was what we put on our agenda instead.  We slept a lot...stress free from the city and all quiet on the island but we also:

  • hiked the lake in the early morning hours

  • laughed at the hiker's before us...

  • watched bunnies and drank beer (aaah island life)

and of course...

  • ate oysters😋

Island life whether it be Orcas on the West or P.E.I. on the East you gotta love island life for a little while.

A few extra shots that made the Orcas cut:

Until next time...Goodnight Orcas 😴

What island should I visit next?  What do you think?  Let me know in the comments below!
